Parent Training

Untitled-1My husband, Zach, and I are certified Empowered to Connect (ETC) Parent Trainers, and are available to train parents on Empowered to Connect parenting principles in the northern-Maryland area.  ETC training is an interactive learning experienced designed for small groups of couples who are already parenting, or who are waiting to adopt/foster.  It was created by Michael and Amy Monroe based on the Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) practices developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis at TCU Institute of Child Development.

ETC employs a connected parenting style designed to meet the needs of children from hard places – those who have suffered trauma, neglect, and/or abuse.  It has been proven over and over again through scientific research that traditional parenting techniques are simply not effective for these at-risk children.  We know this to be true from our own personal experience as well.  But over time, connecting parenting can bring hope for true change and healing.

The ETC Parent Training teaches the connecting, empowering, and correcting core principles of TBRI.  A holistic understanding of children’s needs and development is emphasized, so that parents can learn tools to effectively meet needs, build trust, and help children heal and grow.  The training is taught from a Christian perspective and focuses on a wide range of topics and issues relevant to adoptive and foster parents, including helping parents understand the impact of their child’s history, what they themselves bring to the parent-child relationship, the fundamentals of attachment, the impact of fear, and the importance of meeting their child’s sensory processing, nutritional and other physiological needs.

As ETC Parent Trainers, Zach and I are certified to teach two training courses: the Connect Course and the Prepare Course.  Both courses meet weekly in a small group settings of 10-15 couples at a church for approximately 2 hours.  At-home readings and exercises are included so that parents can get the most out of the courses.  Fees to cover supplies and study materials are required.  Both husband and wife are required to attend the sessions together.

  • The Connect Course is a 9-session course designed for couples who are already parenting adoptive or foster children, OR for couples who are currently waiting to adopt or foster and are already parenting biological children.  A weekly outline of sessions is as follows:
    • Week 1: Building a Foundation of Connection
    • Week 2: Understanding What Your Child Brings to the Relationship
    • Week 3: Examining What You Bring to the Relationship (Part 1)
    • Week 4: Examining What You Bring to the Relationship (Part 2)
    • Week 5: Discovering the Heart of Connection – Attachment
    • Week 6: Focusing on the Needs of the Whole Child
    • Week 7: Putting It All Together: Connecting While Correcting (Part 1)
    • Week 8: Putting It All Together: Connecting While Correcting (Part 2)
    • Week 9: Putting It All Together: Connecting While Correcting (Part 3)
  • The Prepare Course is a 6-session course designed for couples who are not currently parenting any children, and are waiting to adopt or foster.  It covers the same material as the Connect Course, but without the participatory at-home parenting exercises.  A weekly outline of sessions is as follows:
    • Week 1: Building a Foundation of Connection
    • Week 2: Examining What You Bring to the Relationship
    • Week 3: Discovering the Heart of Connection – Attachment
    • Week 4: Focusing on the Needs of the Whole Child

  • Additionally, we are available for one-time speaking engagements on a variety of connected parenting topics, depending on what your organization or group may be interested in.

Please contact us at ETCParentTrainer@gmail.com to discuss your specific ETC training and speaking engagement requests.  Our goal is to partner with adoptive and foster parents in the local northern-Maryland area who can benefit from the parenting strategies that have helped us so much.  We look forward to hearing from you!
